TEACHER AS A FACILITATOR




A facilitator of learning, therefore, is a teacher who does not operate under the traditional concept of teaching, but rather is meant to guide and assist students in learning for themselves - picking apart ideas, forming their own thoughts about them, and owning material through self-exploration and dialogue.


WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A TEACHER AS A FACILITATOR?
The students need to be supported and guided in order to learn the necessary skills to achieve the desired outcomes. The teacher's main role is as a facilitator – there to offer support and advice when needed, and to provide the necessary scaffolding and teaching of skills when necessary.


HOW CAN A TEACHER BE A GOOD FACILITATOR IN THE CLASSROOM?

When we say the teacher has to play the role of a facilitator in the classroom, this means that the teacher should not be the king who controls the activities of the learners. He /she should grant the learners some space to let the spirits of creativity and innovation.

Traditionally, teachers are the ones with knowledge and expertise in a particular field. They impart that knowledge through a variety of means to their students. Facilitators build on the knowledge base of the group of students to find the answers to questions

Teachers who adopt a facilitator or activity-based style encourage self-learning in the classroom through increased peer to teacher learning. Unlike the lecture style, teachers ask students to question rather than simply have the answer given to them.

A facilitator is a person who helps a group of people to work together better, understand their common objectives, and plan how to achieve these objectives, during meetings or discussions. In doing so, the facilitator remains "neutral", meaning he/she does not take a particular position in the discussion.
